NOTES

  • The online media conglomerate ‘Tencent Holdings’ famous for their Wechat communication App paid cash for a 15% stake in JD.com in 2014, handing over a selection of their e-commerce businesses in order to form a stronger competitor to the Alibaba group.
  • JD.COM’S revenues are mainly from first party business, i.e. they sell goods themselves to their customers (compared to other sites like Taobao who sell other company’s products to their customers), this means that the inventory is JD’s risk.
  • JD claims not to allow any counterfeits or fakes on their platform. Taobao, which is still the driving force for traffic to Tmall has many fakes.
  • JD has a fresh food (mostly imported) section which provides delivery within 24 hours.
