Papa John's entered China market in 2003. Papa John’s offers local favourites in China, including a Shanghai favourite of pizza sprinkled with hand tossed fried cod bites and corn and drizzled with honey mustard. Other Chinese favourites include golden crab sticks, cream and mushroom samosa, rice and noodles, squid and shrimp balls.
To compete with Pizzahut and Domino's, it often refreshes its menu with seasonal themes, such as a Caribbean concept for the release of a "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie.
In 2018, facing increasing competition, Papa John's has sold its 34 North China restaurants to Asia Gourmet Holdings(Shanghai) Co. Ltd.
